Arthur is a cheerful person full of desire and projects, and it was a pleasure to accompany him on this one, his Manivelle N°63.
We met for the first time last summer, and he shared with us the broad outlines that would guide the project. Firstly, to concoct a sidekick capable of covering long distances quickly, in minimalist loading configurations. Secondly, to define a build based around a hub with integrated gears and a belt drive, for a minimum of routine maintenance. Finally, taut lines designed around double-triangle geometry and a raced fork. The choice of a gradient paint finish will be the icing on the cake, making this a project with many firsts for us.
The frame is made from Columbus Spirit HSS, and coupled with a road-oriented geometry (short chainstays, high headtube angle) offers high efficiency. We looked after the most unobtrusive solution possible and with the least mechanical impact for the seatstay decoupling zone, in order to be able to install the belt. The internal routine for the transmission and brakes make for a super-sleek build. These passages exit in a tangential way around the headtube, to avoid rubbing the sheaths on the steering tube.
The fork was another key point in the project: the idea was to design a steel fork with the muscular proportions of a carbon fork, which often features “characterful” fork crowns. We worked on a typical 5-segment fork, based on re-ovalised Columbus forks. To reinforce the joints and distribute the stresses, we integrated an internal structure : a tubular triangulation hides inside 🙂
We love the dialogue of eras, in terms of both aesthetics and components, that characterizes Arthur’s Manivelle N°63. The powder-coating gradient was the final challenge before delivery, and it gave our partner painter a hard time. The powder is fixed to the frame by static electricity before baking, and the internal stainless steel passages disturbed the magnetic field at the bases, complicating the smooth transition from violet to melon orange. Many thanks to Vivien, who took care of this gradient personally and patiently.
Arthur trusted us to evolve his ideas and the project roadmap. We loved watching Arthur discover all the details on the day of delivery, and seeing him enjoy his first lap around the block. His enthusiasm of his legs and brain will take him far!
Can’t wait to hear about your upcoming adventures, Arthur!
